Academician Zhao Zhongwei Awarded the Title of National Model Teacher

On September 8, the ceremony celebrating the 40th Teachers' Day and commending advanced collectives and individuals in the national education system was held in Beijing. Zhao Zhongwei, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of our college, was conferred the honorary title of National Model Teacher.


The title of National Model Teacher is awarded to teachers who have achieved outstanding achievements in education, teaching and research, made remarkable accomplishments in talent cultivation and played an exemplary leading role. Selected once every five years, this honor is granted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Education, along with medals and certificates. This year, a total of 716 teachers were selected for this title among more than 18 million teachers nationwide.

In undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, Professor Zhao Zhongwei pioneered the object-oriented teaching method and teaches students with patience, winning wide popularity among students. Principles of Metallurgical Processes, the core course of metallurgical engineering hosted by him, has been honored as a national high-quality course, national first-class undergraduate course and ideological and political demonstration course of Central South University.

Having engaged in teaching for nearly 30 years, he has cultivated over 10 postdoctoral researchers and more than 100 masters and doctors, fostering a large number of high-caliber talents for China's non-ferrous metal industry. He was named Outstanding Teacher of Hunan Province in 2007 and won the National May 1st Labor Medal in 2012.

He has long been committed to the research on extraction and separation of non-ferrous metals. He led the development of a series of new tungsten metallurgy technologies and the electrochemical magnesium-lithium separation technology for salt lake brines, which greatly support the utilization and security of tungsten and lithium resources in China. He has won one First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, two Second Prizes of National Technological Invention Award and one China Patent Gold Award, and was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in November 2023.
