On December 26, 2024, the 17th Hunan Postgraduate Innovation Forum — "Metallurgy Plus" Interdisciplinary Sub-forum was successfully held in Jingui Building on the New Campus of Central South University. Adhering to the philosophy of "Cross-border Integration, Exchange and Innovation", the forum focused on new materials, intelligent metallurgical plants and other themes within the interdisciplinary field of "Metallurgy + New Energy". College leaders including Cheng Qiongwen, Chen Ailiang, Zhu Zhongping and Liu Fangyang attended the event. Teachers and students participated both on-site and online. The forum was well-received with a warm atmosphere, and was presided over by Vice President Liu Fangyang.

At the opening ceremony, Secretary Cheng Qiongwen delivered an opening speech and extended a warm welcome to all participants. He introduced the university’s enrollment of engineering masters and doctors in 2024, and elaborated on the work-study alternation training model and relevant requirements for engineering postgraduates based on the integration of science & education as well as industry & education and interdisciplinary development.
He emphasized that the university attaches great importance to scientific research. The training of engineering postgraduates should keep pace with global technological frontiers and meet major national strategic needs. Through interdisciplinary layout of "Metallurgy + New Energy", it aims to boost economic growth and strategic emerging industries. He encouraged postgraduates to engage in scientific research with full enthusiasm and firm resolve, grow into high-level outstanding engineering talents urgently needed for national strategies, and shoulder the responsibilities of the times.

A total of 64 papers from universities across the province and beyond were submitted to this forum. Thirty postgraduates delivered oral presentations and 62 students displayed academic posters, with over 160 postgraduates participating online and offline. After expert review, 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 8 third prizes for excellent papers were selected. At the closing ceremony, Vice President Liu Fangyang announced the proposed award list and delivered a concluding speech.
It is reported that the "Metallurgy Plus" Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Innovation Forum has been held for three sessions since 2021. Covering new energy, metallurgy, environmental science, artificial intelligence and other disciplines, it fully interprets the connotation of "Metallurgy Plus" interdisciplinary development, which is highly consistent with the college’s development philosophy of "New Energy +" and "Artificial Intelligence +".
