On December 5, the demonstration open course on ideological and political education of the national first-class course "Principles of Metallurgical Processes", given by Academician Zhao Zhongwei, Dean of the college and Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was successfully held in Classroom 404, Building B, Xiaoxiang Campus. This open course attracted more than 30 on-site participants, including university undergraduate teaching supervision experts, teaching backbones and young teachers of the college. Through the virtual teaching and research office, it was connected with more than 20 cooperative units such as Guizhou University, Jiangxi University of Science and Technology, Zhengzhou University and Changsha Nonferrous Metallurgical Design and Research Institute, with a total of more than 100 teachers and students participating in the observation and learning online and offline.

At the beginning of the class, Academician Zhao Zhongwei vividly deconstructed the scientific nature of the metallurgical process with "reduction reaction" as the thread. He compared the complex reduction process to a "battle for oxygen" between metals and oxygen, and clearly explained the thermodynamic equilibrium principle of gas reducing agents such as carbon monoxide through daily life analogies such as "turning valves". Through the in-depth analysis of the step-by-step reduction equilibrium diagram of iron oxides, he revealed the scientific significance of the key temperature point of 570℃; when explaining the mechanism of solid carbon reduction, he introduced the "gas phase medium" theory, pointing out that carbon monoxide is like a "messenger" that efficiently transfers oxygen between carbon and ore, making the abstract concrete and fascinating. In the class, the students not only deeply felt Academician Zhao's profound love for the metallurgical discipline, but also responded with attentive listening and positive eyes, realizing the effective transmission of knowledge and enthusiasm.

The whole class runs through the teaching philosophy of "Understanding Precedes Memory, Thinking Leads Innovation". Academician Zhao emphasized that the core of engineering learning lies in mastering principles rather than memorizing formulas, and we should strive to transform knowledge into an "instinct" for solving practical problems. Through heuristic interaction and case teaching, he effectively stimulated students' scientific interest and critical thinking. In terms of integrating ideological and political education into the curriculum, Academician Zhao cleverly combined the development and challenges of China's lithium battery industry to guide students to deeply think about the significance of scientific and technological innovation to national strategies; by showing the key role of the metallurgical discipline in the industrial system, he enhanced students' professional pride and industry sense of mission; adopting the method of "innovative thinking traction" to solve problems to learn textbook knowledge reflects the teaching paradigm of "injecting philosophical thoughts with common principles and stimulating students' thinking leap" required for the training of top talents, realizing the in-depth integration of value guidance and professional education.

After the open course, a discussion and exchange was held in Classroom 208, Building A. Chen Ailiang, Vice Dean of the college, participated in the exchange and pointed out that Academician Zhao's class vividly demonstrated the innovative thinking and "integration of knowledge and action" in using basic theories to solve engineering problems, providing an important reference for how to strengthen the thinking of knowledge integration and ability connection in the training of elite engineers.

The university and college supervision experts unanimously believed that this class broke through the traditional textbook framework and formed a unique teaching logic based on a profound understanding of the discipline. Professor Li Kun from the Institute of Powder Metallurgy particularly appreciated Academician Zhao Zhongwei's approach of "analyzing problems from basic principles" to cultivate the ability to solve problems, believing that this is more important than imparting isolated knowledge points.

Jin Yisu, Director of the Teacher Teaching Development Center, sighed in his evaluation: "Listening to Teacher Zhao's class is really enjoyable. Not a single tedious formula was taught, but the principles were analyzed thoroughly, in a simple and in-depth way, integrating knowledge. We found a model here with Teacher Zhao. This is a very wonderful demonstration course on ideological and political education worthy of our learning!"

This open course is not only a wonderful display of the construction of the "Principles of Metallurgical Processes" course, but also a vivid embodiment of Academician Zhao Zhongwei, Dean of the National Graduate College for Elite Engineers, practicing the educational philosophy of "Ideological and Political Education with Flavor, Teaching with Methods, and Education with Soul". In the future, the National Graduate College for Elite Engineers will continue to deepen the integration and innovation of ideological and political education and engineering education, promote excellent teaching paradigms, and contribute greater strength to cultivating new-era engineers who care about the country's major issues and have outstanding innovative capabilities.
